Timothy Yovich Obituary

Timothy M. Yovich of Youngstown, an award-winning journalist, passed away peacefully on May 5th. He was 75 years old.
    Tim was born Aug. 17, 1946 in Warren, a son of Stephen J. and Emma M. He was a 1964 graduate of Howland High School where he lettered in basketball and football. Tim won a number of state journalism awards for sports writing for the student newspaper.
    He graduated in 1968 from Ohio University with a degree in journalism. While at the university he served on the dean of men's staff and taught typography laboratories at the school of journalism. He was commissioned a lieutenant through the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps after being named a "Distinguished Military Graduate."
    Tim began his professional career in 1968 as a general assignment reporter with The Vindicator before being called to active duty that same year during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany where he was the executive officer and then commanding officer of the division replacement detachment after being promoted to first lieutenant. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
    After being discharged in 1970, Tim returned to The Vindicator. He primarily covered criminal justice-law enforcement and courts. He received several state and national awards for news and feature writing of street, organized crime and juvenile crime. He retired in 2008.
    He was a member of the American Legion Post 196 in Brecksville, Croatian Federation Union St. George Lodge 66 and the Newspaper Guild Local 11, having served as vice president and president. He was a Catholic. In his spare time, Tim enjoyed golf having scored two holes-in-one. He also like gardening, reading and following the Cleveland Browns and Indians.
    Tim leaves several cousins and close friends in the Warren and Youngstown area. He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen J. Sr. and Emma M. along with brothers, Stephen J. Jr. and David S. Yovich.
    There will be a private prayer service at the cemetery but no calling hours. Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta, Ohio. Arrangements are being taken care of by Nosek-McCreery Funeral Home in Brecksville, Ohio.
    Tim requested that material tributes take the form of contributions to Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, 4250 Shields Rd., Canfield, Ohio 44406.
