Thomas M. Salzman

Thomas M. Salzman, 66, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on January 17, 2026, in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was born on August 13, 1959, in Akron, OH to Harold and Jeanne Salzman. He enjoyed his youth in Ohio, especially fishing trips with the family and playing sports throughout the seasons. He attended and graduated from Brecksville High School, where his love of theatre was sparked when he played the Scarecrow in the school’s production of The Wizard of Oz. He matriculated to Carnegie Mellon where he earned a BFA and MFA in theatre. Upon graduation, he designed lighting and stages for a number of theatres. He was the Resident Lighting Designer for 18 years for the Caldwell Theatre Company (FL) where he designed the lighting for more than 80 productions, including 12 world premiers. His work garnered him two Best Lighting Designer Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s answer to the Tony Awards. Other design credits include Coconut Grove Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, City Theatre Company (Miami), Playhouse Square Foundation (Cleveland), Florida Philharmonic, Heinz USA, PPG Inc., General Electric and others. He was a member of United Scenic Artist local #829, as well as an Actors Equity Association Stage Manager.

As passionate as he was about lighting, he took equal pride in sharing his knowledge with students. During his career he taught at some of the top universities in the country, including the University of Miami (FL) and Penn State, finishing his career at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, where he achieved the rank of full professor while serving as department chair. Throughout his academic career, he also introduced his students to the real world of production and design by engaging them in field experiences and internships at local and regional playhouses, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Many of his students went on to professional employment in theatre.

Before his death, Thomas fulfilled his dream of retiring to Costa Rica. He is survived by his partner and wife of thirty years, Carolyn; his siblings, Jim Salzman (Amy) and Diane Howard; and sister-in-law, Sandy Salzman. He was the fun uncle and grand uncle to many nieces and nephews who reveled in his stories and laughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Jeanne Salzman; and his brother, Dan Salzman.

Thomas M. Salzman leaves behind a legacy of endless cherished memories. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
