Richard Urban Obituary

Richard "Rich" F. Urban, age 93 passed away in the early hours of March 17, 2022. Born in Cleveland, OH to Richard and Ruth (nee Hanzl) Urban. Rich was a wise, kind, loving, funny and humble man who always put others first.

Rich graduated from Garfield Hts. High School where he played baseball, basketball, along with playing the trumpet in the band and orchestra. Rich's love for baseball led to a short stint in the minor leagues where he played first base for the Philadelphia Phillies. After returning back home, he worked many long hours alongside his grandfather in the family's meat market (Urban's Meats).

In 1950, Rich was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean War where he worked as a radio operator. It was on the front lines that Rich made some lifelong friendships. Upon returning home from the war, Rich married Marianne (nee Guy) in June of 1953. Rich, Marianne and their two daughters lived in Brecksville\Broadview Hts. for over 30 years. He worked as a computer programmer for Lorain National Bank for most of his professional career, retiring in 1991.

Rich enjoyed walks in the Metroparks and along the towpath, playing cards, and playing golf. His greatest joy was his family, from birthday celebrations to holiday gatherings. His dumplings and sweet/sour cabbage will certainly be missed at Thanksgiving gatherings. Not only was he an avid Cleveland sports fan but he spent many hours following his grandchildren on the soccer fields, baseball fields, basketball courts and golf courses.

Rich will be deeply missed by his daughter, Kris Schreiber (Gus); sisters Ruth Bullock, Audrey Cash; grandchildren, Kaitlin Kenney, Austin and Alec Schreiber, son in law Mike Kiraly. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marianne and his loving daughter Kathy Kiraly.

At his request a celebration of Rich's life will be held later this summer.
