Katherine Newman Obituary

KATHERINE DAGGETT NEWMAN, 75, beloved wife and mother, passed away on June 18, 2020. Her incredibly kind spirit, generosity and unconditional love of family guided her daily. Katherine’s warmth, compassion, and infectious smile welcomed and comforted those around her; she simply gave more of herself than she took or expected from others. Born to John and Mary Katherine Daggett on June 17, 1945 in Niagara Falls, NY, Katherine is survived by her husband Robert Newman; son Raymond Newman (Margaret); son James Newman (Susan); daughter Colleen Newman; grandchildren Julia, Edwin, Jacob, and Charles Newman; and brother-in-law John C. Newman, M.D. A graduate of Endicott College, Katherine devoted her life to helping others through volunteer work in her community. From Meals on Wheels, to packing boxes of food for veterans serving overseas, to help in raising scholarship money for students as a part of the Women’s Club of Hudson and in serving as an integral part of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution chapter in Hudson, Ohio, Katherine gave of her time and energy for the improvement of others and worthy causes. A dedicated spouse, parent, and grandparent, Katherine adored and loved dearly her family. Having known Robert since the age of fifteen, Katherine and Robert forged a relationship of love and devotion for over sixty years. A lover of baking and cleaning, Katherine would never let a pair of pants or a shirt go without being ironed or pressed to perfection. In terms of baking, she enjoyed making incredible pies from scratch, especially strawberry rhubarb and she made the best brownies with chocolate icing that were so smooth, one might think one could skate on top of them. But, wow, those brownies were special, and she also loved a good chocolate chip scone. Katherine taught her children and grandchildren to be wonderful and caring people. Her selflessness and kind spirit gave confidence to those around her to simply do their best as she loved everyone for their unique qualities and talents. In addition, she enjoyed traveling and seeing many different parts of the world (England with Robert and Colleen – perhaps this trip solidified her love of sheep), but she held a special place in her heart for Cape Cod, MA and time spent with her sister Gail in White River Junction, VT. Talking while playing games of cards, Katherine cherished the time spent with her sister. Katherine enjoyed attending any event where she could support her grandchildren ranging from cross-country meets, lacrosse games, theatre productions, or football games. She was always in the crowd giving words of encouragement or cheer. Christmas was an incredibly special time for Katherine and her family. The annual trip to Ohio Amish country to cut down a set of trees for different family members or the opportunity to attend the Cleveland Orchestra’s Christmas Concert, Katherine reveled in the chance to share her love of the holidays. Her special talent was to find gifts that surprised and demonstrated how well she knew everyone and make them feel special and loved. She forged strong and meaningful individual relationships with her children and grandchildren. In addition, she and Robert always enjoyed the company of golden retrievers and loved those animals who provided comfort and laughter. Katherine Daggett Newman will be sorely missed by her family. She possessed an inner light and spirit that filled those around her with love, joy, and a true sense of belonging. She made everyone feel “at home” in her presence.
