FRED O. BURKHALTER, age 80, passed away on May 29, 2026. He was born June 15, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Fred was the oldest of three kids born to Fred O. Burkhalter, Sr. and Virginia Marsh Burkhalter (nee Marsh) (both deceased).
He is survived by sisters Nancy Burkhalter (Edmonds, WA) and Susan B. Irving (David K. Irving) (New York City), nephew Alexander Marsh Kubacki, (Anchorage, AK), and niece Austin Irving (Lance Holtje), and grandniece Eve Holtje (Los Angeles).
Fred is also survived by his significant other, Evelyn "Penny" Sindelar, with whom he shared a long relationship of travel and companionship.
Fred was shot with buckshot when stealing apples when he was 16 years old along with his friend Bob Evert. (See articles in the photo gallery)
Fred was an accomplished water and snow skier, scuba diver, and spear fisher.
He took top honors in the Northern Ohio Physical Fitness Invitational decathlon when he was 17. (See article in the photo gallery)
He traveled to the Isle of Man many times to attend the BMW motorcycle rally.
He loved to cruise the roads of Germany and Switzerland to visit friends and relatives.
He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He served in the Army from 1968 thru 1974 and obtained the rank of sergeant.
When Fred, Sr., died 1969, Fred was excused from being deployed to Vietnam. Since he was the sole surviving son, he was assigned to a post stateside.
Fred had a very successful independent insurance business in Brecksville on Mill Road.
He moved his house from where it was built sitting close to Mill Road to the back lot so he could build his office park and rent out space.
Fred was a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Club of Brecksville. He participated and enjoyed the many activities sponsored by Kiwanis including the annual Horse Show, Car Shows, and driving his 1966 Ford Galaxy 500 Convertible in the Brecksville Memorial Parades.
Family and friends will be received at NOSEK-McCREERY FUNERAL HOME, 8150 BRECKSVILLE RD., BRECKSVILLE, OH 44141 on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. followed by a eulogy and sharing of memories in honor and celebration of Fred's life at 12 p.m.
