Eleanor Brucken Obituary

Eleanor E. Brucken (nee George), June 18,1929 - September 22, 2023

Born in Cleveland, Ellie was the eldest child of Rudolph George and Bertha Bruckner.  She had wide-ranging interests and in mid-life developed a desire to learn more about her ancestry.  She researched her father's Hungarian and her mother's Transylvanian Saxon and German Mennonite ancestries.   She also researched her husband's German and English ancestries.  She found extended family members both here in the States and in Europe.  She and her husband made several trips to their ancestral environs and visited extended family there.  Through her research and outreach, she enriched the lives of many by reuniting extended family members in the States, in Europe and between the two continents.  She held a Bruckner family reunion in Brecksville and the European Bruckners then held a reunion in Germany which many from the States attended.  Ellie was active in several genealogy and civic groups and, together with her husband, enjoyed world-wide travel, skiing, snorkeling, classical music, and theater.

She was the first in her family to attend university: Bachelors from Ohio University, Masters from Kent State and post-master studies at Northwestern.  She went on to become a faculty member at West Virginia University as a clinical Speech Pathologist and instructor and a Speech Pathologist in the Lorain, Parma and Cleveland school systems.  She also served as a civilian at the US Peden Army base in Germany as the Service Club's recreation director.
She is survived by her husband John of 48 years, her sister Sylvia George (Dodge Wells) and niece Katharine Wells, brother-in-law Robert Brucken (Lois-deceased), sister-in-law Angela Brucken (Joel-deceased) and, on her husband's side, many nieces and nephews.  She lost her brother Daniel George in 2002 and her seven-year-old nephew Matthew Wells in 1987.

A memorial gathering will be held at Nosek-McCreery Funeral Home, 8150 Brecksville Rd., Brecksville, OH 44141 on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 6-8 pm and on Saturday, October 28 from 10-11:30 am where Ellie's memorial service will follow at 11:30 am.  Private interment at Acacia Memorial Park.
