CHARLES R. HANKEY, age 77, passed away August 17, 2024. Beloved husband of Denise (nee Gielinski) for 27 years. Dear son of William J. Hankey, Jr. and Marion Hankey (nee Baillis) and son-in-law of Alice Gielinski. Loving brother of Cheryl Parker (Daryl). Dear uncle of Matthew Parker, Graham Parker (Andrea), Katherine Mauldin (Timmy), and Seth Parker (Larissa) and great uncle of 14. His memory will be cherished by all who loved him. Charlie is also survived by Denise's daughters, Lisa Brandon (nee Steely) (Michael) and Robyn Steely; granddaughter, Nina Brandon; as well as other family members including Renee Hay, Afton Bahle, Lily Nagel, and Violet Bahle.
Charlie's wide-ranging interests reflect a colorful life: work in the Peace Corps in Thailand and Turkey; a customs inspector in San Francisco, and was at the forefront of a pioneering generation of computer programmers and software designers. Intelligent and well-read, he was a contestant on Jeopardy, spoke several languages and was a fine pianist. His first, but sadly last novel, Headhunter Jazz, published in 2022, reflects his love of American history, patriotism, and his clever wit.
Family and friends will be received at Brecksville United Methodist Church, 65 Public Square, Brecksville, OH 44141 on Friday, November 1, 2024 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. followed by a service of remembrance at 4:00 p.m.
