Laura San Pietro Obituary

LAURA ELLEN SAN PIETRO, 63, of Bloomington, IN passed away Friday evening, October 4, 2019, at the I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital Hospice House surrounded by family and friends.

Laura was born to Anthony G. and Alice K. (King) San Pietro on July 14, 1956, in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1962, the family moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio. Laura had fond memories of growing up in Yellow Springs, of John Bryan State Park, the Glen Helen Nature Preserve and The Riding Center – where Laura first took horseback riding lessons. In 1968, the family moved to Bloomington. In high school, Laura excelled in French. She was selected as one of 30 participants from around the state of Indiana to spend two months in France in an exchange program that immersed students in the French language and culture. When Laura returned that summer, she was fluent in French. After graduating from Bloomington High School South (class of 1974), Laura attended Indiana University in Bloomington, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, and a minor in French.

After graduation, Laura and her best friend ventured out to California. Although the trip originated as a vacation, Laura ended up living most of her adult life in Studio City, California. Laura worked for Bank of America as a certified teller for four years before working for Universal Studios as a Talent Cashier, then a Participation Statement Clerk, and finally a Timekeeper/Administrative Assistant. She enjoyed her work, which allowed her to use her keen organizational skills. She was confident in her ability to communicate with people of all levels-from management to skilled technical workers. In 2003, she retired from Universal Studios to take care of her mom. After her mom’s death, Laura returned to California. She worked for the Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans for a short period of time before retiring again, in 2007, to take care of her dad. Caring for her parents in their last years was of the utmost importance to Laura.

Laura is survived by her brother, James R. “Jamie” San Pietro, of Lafayette, Indiana, and sister, Judith A. “Jodie” San Pietro, of Springfield, Virginia.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Alice K. in 2004, and Anthony G. “Tony” San Pietro, in 2008.

Laura was a kind, generous, and wonderful person. Whether for a birthday, Christmas, or merely a simple thank you, she always endeavored to find just the right card or gift. She had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She befriended everyone she met. She loved walking her golden retriever, Perry, in the neighborhood and stopping and chatting with all the other pet parents. Also, she cared for her cat, Mei-u (in spite of being allergic to cats from the time she was a little girl). She was the best pet parent – taking Mei-u to Purdue Small Animal Hospital for more than eight years for the treatment of cancer.

When nearing the end of her life, Laura was asked, “When you were a little girl, what did you want to accomplish as an adult?” Her surprising, quick, and clear response was that she just wanted to be known for being a nice person. Laura accomplished this goal many times over by being available to family, friends, and neighbors – helping with their animals, watching their homes while they were on vacation, driving them to doctors’ appointments, and just lending a listening ear. Laura will be greatly missed by the many people and animals she so lovingly cared for.
